BMR-Octance technote

Hybrid overview

BMR-Octane

BMR Octane is a proven sorghum x sudan forage hybrid, with the added advantage of the BMR trait. The BMR (which stands for brown mid-rib) gene means that the leaves and stems of the plants have a reduced lignin content. This means the forage will be more palatable, have enhanced digestibility and a higher energy content, due to this reduction in lignin. The combined effect of higher energy content and increased palatability can result in significantly higher daily energy intake as stock can consume more forage and each kilogram of feed contains more available energy. This multiplier effect results in higher animal productivity. Under favourable growing conditions, BMR Octane can be cut or grazed a number of times during the season. Octane has been bred and developed in Australia and has strong vigorous seedlings, late maturity and good standability. Even though it is not a sweet sorghum, the stems are relatively sweet, providing added flexibility in grazing time and making it easier to manage.
