The real science behind iClasses trial analysis

Aerial view of yellow flowering crop fields with long rectangular plots and a dirt path through farmland

Pacific Seeds runs a Factor Analytic (FA) linear mixed model for MET analysis using ASREML with iClasses, where iClasses are groups of trials that capture patterns of variety by environment interaction.

The iClasses are an extension of a normal MET analysis where you would normally cluster trials based on a dendrogram of trial relatedness.

The iClasses analysis methodology developed by the University of Wollongong creates an accurate output comparing all varieties and technologies over a range of seasons and different growing environments across Australia. The groups shown on the MET outputs are called “interaction classes” (iClasses).

How to interpret the output

The iClasses groups of trials capture patterns of genetics (G) (variety) by environment (E) interactions (iClasses 1 to 4).

This graphic output accurately compares 7 different technologies across 30 trial environments over 2 growing seasons.

Compare the varieties by using the Y axis for the difference in mean t/ha values.

The dotted lines represent the mean value for each variety through all 4 iClasses groups.

e.g. ATR Bonito is 1.24 t/ha lower yielding than Hyola Regiment XC on average across all 4 iClasses groups.
