Sniper gives Lancer growers the same maturity, adaptation and disease package they already rely on, plus 5 to 9% more yield across NSW and Southern Queensland, and it holds yield when sown late instead of falling away the way Lancer does. It’s the first variety suitable to replace Lancer that carries an RMR stripe rust rating since 2020.
01 Where it fits
Sniper is an APH early-season wheat for NSW and Southern Queensland, bred by LongReach Plant Breeders and commercialised by Pacific Seeds. It is a Lancer replacement: same Mid Slow Spring maturity, same late April to mid-May sowing window, same disease package on the ratings that drive this market, and 5 to 9% more yield.
Across 12 northern sites over five seasons Sniper reached 50% heading within about a day of Lancer. Like Lancer, it moves its phenology as the season demands, so in some conditions the gap between the two may open slightly. At southern latitudes it shifts toward Slow Spring, as Lancer-derived lines do.
Geography. Best adapted to Northern New South Wales, and performs from north of Temora through to Roma. Central Queensland is outside the range. Southern New South Wales growers can use it, and it indexes strongly there in later-sown situations.
02 Yield: 5 to 9% over Lancer
Where it leads
Sniper has out-yielded Lancer in every year of the NVT data and the LongReach Plant Breeders breeding trials. Across 143 NVT trials in NSW and Southern Queensland from 2021 to 2025, Sniper averages an index of 104 against Lancer’s 95, about 9%. In the LongReach breeding trials, 52 early-season trials over 2022 to 2025, Sniper sits at 106% of trial mean against Lancer’s 98%, ~8%, with the widest margins in the tough-finish and late-harvest clusters (both 108%).

Head to head by region
In the northern trials where both varieties were grown, Sniper averages 0.23 t/ha more than Lancer. The five-year northern index reads 103 against 98 across 88 trials, with Sniper entered in 35 of those and predicted for the balance, so the head-to-head figure is the closer read of the two. In Southern New South Wales the margin is wider again: about 14% across 55 trials, and 0.42 t/ha head to head.
Against the rest of the segment
Sniper has shown consistent yield performance across the region, ahead of Lancer and of the LRPB lines released to follow it. Its five-year average is affected by predicted performance in the years it was not entered.

03 Sowing window, and what happens when you sow late
Where it leads
Sniper’s window is late April to mid-May, the same as Lancer’s. However Sniper holds yield when sown late instead of falling away the way Lancer does.
In the AMPS time-of-sowing series, Sniper and Lancer are level at early sowing. As sowing gets later the two separate: at the late window Sniper holds 103.6% of the trial mean while Lancer falls to 99.3%. Field observation through the breeding programme points the same way, with Sniper showing a more aggressive maturity stress-response than Lancer in warm or stressed years, which works in its favour when conditions tighten.

Sniper’s ideal sowing window is the same as Lancer’s, late April to mid-May. What the time-of-sowing data adds is how it behaves when a season runs past that window.
04 Setting expectations early: screenings
Sniper has one grain-quality watch-out compared to Lancer under stress.
Important to know
In 2023 Sniper showed potential for higher screenings than Lancer after experiencing severe stress during grain fill. Those northern trials were planted late in the window and met a combination of moisture stress and crown rot. On that data Sniper performed on par with other varieties of similar maturity, though it sat behind Lancer for screenings and test weight. The softer 2025 season did not flag any major grain-quality defect. Taken together, the two years indicate Sniper may carry higher screenings potential than Lancer.
Managing it. Screenings risk is typically reduced with Victrato seed treatment. In the MCA Ag Group crown-rot trial at Drillham, screenings under crown-rot pressure came back from 3.03% without Victrato to 2.06% with it. The published Agro Pack provides preliminary quality data from those trials that indicates Victrato may help manage screenings risk against Lancer in the northern zone.
The rest of the quality picture
- Protein. On par with varieties of similar maturity, and behind Lancer: 11.7% against 12.6% in the 2025 northern trials.
- Test weight. Slightly behind Lancer, 81.5 against 82.2 kg/hl in the 2023 northern trials.
- 1000-grain weight. Broadly comparable to varieties of similar maturity.
- Classification. APH in NSW and Queensland. Under stress a crop can fall to a lower grade, as any APH wheat can.
05 Disease and plant-health ratings
Sniper carries a similar disease package to its Lancer parent. Stripe rust is the headline: RMR, and Sniper is the first variety suitable to replace Lancer on farm to carry that rating since 2020.

Crown rot in third-party trials
Crown rot carries a provisional NVT rating, matched to Lancer’s. Three independent 2025 trials point to Lancer-like performance under pressure. At Croppa Creek (Crop and Soil Advisory) Sniper was the highest-yielding variety without Victrato and third highest with it. At Lundavra (MCA Ag Group) it produced strong yields and stable screenings across all treatments. At Drillham it held yield across treatments, with screenings lifting under crown-rot pressure where Victrato was not used. In the Delta Mullaley 2025 comparison Sniper yielded significantly above Lancer and the competitor set.

Straw strength
Sniper is slightly taller than Lancer and Optimus and slightly shorter than Raider, with a marked straw-strength improvement over both Lancer and Raider across 11 breeding trials. That matters most in higher-yielding and irrigated paddocks.
07 Availability
Sniper is available for sowing in 2027 through the Pacific Seeds Seed Associate Network. Seed is limited in the first year, so early conversations with a Seed Associate or a Pacific Seeds Territory Manager are worth having.

Yield index method
Every yield figure here is an index: the variety’s yield as a percentage of the mean yield of the trial it was grown in, averaged across trials. It is the standard way to compare varieties across sites and seasons of different yield potential. A (P) marker means the value is predicted from the multi-environment model rather than measured, because the variety was not entered in those trials.
Rating scales
Disease resistance runs R, RMR, MR, MRMS, MS, MSS, S, SVS from most to least resistant. Root-lesion nematode tolerance runs T, TMT, MT, MTMI, MI, MII, I. (P) is provisional.
