Applications open for 2024 Scholarship round
March 4, 2024University of Queensland students can apply for a $5,000 Pacific Seeds Scholarship to assist with their final year agricultural studies.
The scholarship encourages young people to enter the agricultural industry and assists farming families with the costs associated with tertiary education.
As part of the scholarship, students also have the option to conduct practical work experience at Pacific Seeds sites located across Australia offering behind the scenes access to the latest agricultural research and technology through to business, supply chain and customer experience functions.
Previous winner and now University of Queensland graduate Leo Boden’s dream is to become an agriculture industry leader – and he says receiving the Pacific Seeds Agricultural Scholarship has enabled him to pursue that ambition. Leo studied Agribusiness and Sustainable Agriculture, majoring in horticulture at UQ’s Gatton campus and was honoured to receive the $5,000 scholarship.
“I was ecstatic and grateful to learn that I received the Pacific Seeds Agricultural Scholarship,” Leo said.
“Pacific Seeds has a rich history of technological innovation and collaboration with Australian growers, so it was wonderful to be acknowledged by such a respected organisation.
“They even took me on a tour of their Toowoomba site, where I got to meet some of their team and take a look at their office and facilities. The site was very impressive, and it was fascinating to see how they operate and get a real insight into the inner workings of one of the industry’s biggest players.”
“My ambition is to become a leader in the industry and help feed the world through sustainable and environmentally friendly means,” Leo said.
“I want to be a part of delivering solutions to very real, very immediate problems facing the world today, namely food security, which poses a massive challenge across the globe.
“Receiving this scholarship allowed me to pursue this dream by enabling me to focus my attention on completing my studies, instead of working part-time to fund myself.”
Professor Mark Turner, Deputy Head of School for UQ’s School of Agriculture and Food Sciences, said that the school was extremely grateful for the support of Pacific Seeds.
“This generous support helps us educate the next generation of agricultural scientists. Through partnerships like this, students can gain invaluable hands-on training and skills. Agriculture is – and will continue to be – a critical area for the future and there is a need for more graduates who can deliver innovations and solutions across a wide spectrum of the agricultural industry.”
“This great scholarship will help entice and support future leaders in agricultural science.”
