Resolute delivers a win against tough weather and mice conditions
May 31, 2021For Jim Russell, of ‘Niluan’ near Spring Ridge, it was the opportunity to try a new variety of grain sorghum after observing various trials that led him to test out Resolute from Pacific Seeds.
“We are always looking for a new variety – that’s how Resolute came about here,” Jim said.
“Matt Gardner, (AMPS Research Agronomist) put us onto it, and he was able to obtain some rare bags – we kept the process the same as Matt recommended. They’re always doing trials at our place, and we had heard that Resolute was very good, so we put it in with the MR-Taurus.”
As someone who had planted MR-Taurus and MR-Buster from Pacific Seeds in the past, Jim was keen to try a new variety.
Known as a variety that rewards growers with high yields, Resolute has built a reputation for its stress tolerance that can weather the hardest of conditions. The hybrid is suitable for both late and early planting, with consistent grain size, yield and excellent height uniformity.
Despite encountering a slight issue with mice pressure throughout the season, Jim said the Resolute variety was a standout performer during the trial.
“The standability of the Resolute was excellent – the MR-Taurus and the Resolute were pretty much the same, and there was no lodging even though it did get a bit of rain on it,” Jim mentioned.
“The colour stayed really well, and the seed colour was good. In fact, the bird seed market really likes it. Weathering wise there didn’t seem to be any issues,” Jim added.
“It was an easy to harvest variety, and with the Resolute, I really liked how the head sticks out of the flag just a little bit better than the Taurus,” Jim said.
For Jim’s trial, he planted only 20 hectares. However, his trial saw him receive a final yield result of 7.7t/hectare. “I would definitely plant Resolute again,” Jim said.
