Sweet Jumbo LPA technote

Hybrid overview

Sweet Jumbo LPA

Sweet Jumbo LPA (Low Prussic Acid) combines the high productivity and ease of management of the original Jumbo forage sorghum but with higher stem sugar. Being ultra-late flowering makes it easier to manage and the sweeter stems improves palatability and utilization of stems. The result is more useable feed and less wastage. It has also been selected to have lower prussic acid content and even greater leaf production than original Jumbo. When sown before mid-October, the short day length will trigger flowering, but subsequent regrowth will revert to being late flowering. Sweet Jumbo LPA is late flowering but this does not mean grazing should be unnecessarily delayed. It is still recommended that grazing commence when plants are approaching 1.0m in height. Sweet Jumbo LPA is well suited to being grazed by cattle but is also suitable for hay. If it is to be used for hay, the crop should be cut well before flowering and a mower conditioner is essential to aid stem dry down.
